The blowing of the pū. the conch shell. is a significant action and a deep part of Hawaiian tradition and culture. It is a call to the divine. and is blown at the opening of ceremonies. When blown correctly it can be heard for miles. and was also used to announce the arrival of the aliʻi (royalty). as well as to ask for formal permission to enter an area.
